From First Steps to a Team Player
With Support From Goodwill, Nathan Turned Determination Into Meaningful Work
Nathan first connected with Goodwill Industries of West Michigan on August 29, 2016, after his dad encouraged him to build job skills and explore future employment opportunities. He began working in the former Goodwill Industrial Services work center, where he developed consistency, teamwork, and pride in his work. Nathan enjoyed the routine and sense of purpose the work center provided. When it closed in 2023, he was ready to take the next step toward community employment, especially in food service, an industry he has long admired.
With support from Goodwill’s Supported Transitional Employment Program (S.T.E.P.) and its staff, Nathan explored new opportunities. He participated in an on-the-job experience at Lee’s Famous Recipe Chicken before being hired at Taco Bell in March 2025 as a janitorial team member. In his role, Nathan maintains the lobby and restrooms, manages trash removal, and ensures the restaurant is clean and welcoming for customers and staff.
Nathan’s primary job coach, Lori Willson, saw his strengths early on. He is friendly, polite, detail-oriented, and brings a positive sense of humor to the workplace. Through consistent coaching and encouragement, Nathan has grown more confident and independent in his role. He now begins his shifts with focus and initiative, works steadily through his responsibilities, and communicates effectively with coworkers and supervisors. Lori often hears him say, “How am I going to problem-solve this?” — a clear sign of his growing confidence and ability to think through challenges independently.

Nathan shares that he enjoys working at Taco Bell and values being part of a team. He was especially proud to receive his official Taco Bell uniform and to represent his workplace. Employment has provided him with greater independence, structure, and the opportunity to contribute at home. He takes pride in earning his own paycheck and helping his family.
When asked what advice he would give others looking for work, Nathan keeps it simple: “Try hard and do your best.” Its advice he follows every day and it continues to open doors.
Supported Transitional Employment Programming (STEP): STEP gives adults with disabilities and other barriers the opportunity to work with a Goodwill Career Coach to develop job skills, pursue employment that matches abilities, and work in competitive and integrated work environment in the community. Referrals are made for a variety of skill building, supported employment, and vocational evaluation type services to support competitive and integrated employment through HealthWest, Michigan Rehabilitation Services (MRS), and Community Mental Health – Ottawa County.
