Michele Dodge’s Path to Purposeful Employment
Michele was referred to Goodwill by Michigan Rehabilitation Services (MRS) in November 2024 and enrolled in Supported Transitional Employment Programming (STEP). STEP supports adults with disabilities and other barriers by pairing them with a career coach to build job skills and pursue employment aligned with their abilities and interests.
At enrollment, Michele faced barriers including a significant gap in her work history and prior justice involvement. She worked closely with Goodwill Job Placement Supervisor Amy Cumings to develop a strong résumé, strengthen workplace skills, and better understand employer expectations for long-term success. Goodwill staff also supported her through interview practice and coaching to help her respond confidently to interview questions.
To build Michele’s experience and assess her skills, Amy coordinated an on-the-job evaluation (OJE) within Goodwill’s e-commerce division.
With guidance from her job coaching team and e-commerce management staff, Michele was trained in photographing online auction items for authentication. Because photography is one of her hobbies, the role was an excellent fit and helped her gain confidence while developing marketable skills.
After successfully completing her OJE, Michele transitioned to job placement services. She continued working with Amy to submit applications, attend interviews, and follow up with employers. In early June 2025, Michele was hired by Little Caesars Pizza. Following her hire, Goodwill staff provided weekly check-ins to support her ongoing success.
Michele reports that she enjoys her workplace and feels respected by her coworkers, sharing, “Even though I’m the oldest person there, everyone still shows me respect.” She also credits the support of her district manager, Heather, as one of her favorite parts of the job.
Before coming to Goodwill, Michele felt discouraged and frustrated with her job search. At her therapist’s recommendation, she reconnected with MRS. Today, Michele feels happier and more hopeful, saying, “It’s nice to know I’m not alone,” and expressing gratitude for the encouragement, guidance, and support she continues to receive.
Supported Transitional Employment Programming (STEP): STEP gives adults with disabilities and other barriers the opportunity to work with a Goodwill Career Coach to develop job skills, pursue employment that matches abilities, and work in competitive and integrated work environment in the community. Referrals are made for a variety of skill building, supported employment, and vocational evaluation type services to support competitive and integrated employment through HealthWest, Michigan Rehabilitation Services (MRS), and Community Mental Health – Ottawa County.
