From STEP to a Permanent Position at the Goodwill North Holland Store
Ben began his journey with Goodwill in August 2019 through our Supported Transitional Employment Program (STEP). Since then, he has become a respected and valued member of the team—known for his strong work ethic, consistency, and enthusiasm for his role.
Ben communicates and interacts with the world in a way that’s uniquely his own. Like many individuals, he thrives with routine and can find unexpected changes challenging. With personalized coaching and the continued support of the STEP team—Julie Joppie (supervisor), Meg Barry (career coach), and Dawn Partyka (job coach)—Ben has developed tools to navigate social interactions, adapt to workplace changes, and stay engaged in his responsibilities.
Each week, Ben brings focus and positivity to his role at the Goodwill North Holland store, where he’s an expert in the baling process. He takes pride in knowing the weekly tag colors and begins each shift with energy and determination. His motivation inspires those around him. While in a temporary role at the donation door, store manager Kim recognized Ben’s dedication and offered him a permanent position—an acknowledgment of his impact and reliability.
Ben is someone who genuinely enjoys helping others. Whether assisting customers, supporting coworkers, or taking initiative with daily tasks, he brings kindness and purpose to everything he does. Even after his shift ends, he often volunteers to water plants or take out the trash while waiting for his ride—always finding ways to be helpful and contribute.
For Ben, having a job brings more than a paycheck—it brings purpose, pride, and connection. He values the opportunity to be part of a team and to give back in meaningful ways.
One of the unique ways Ben builds community at work is through his end-of-day “staff meetings.” What began as gentle encouragement to greet coworkers has grown into a team tradition—gathering together to hear Ben share parting words and announce when he’ll be back. His enthusiasm has created a positive routine that brings people together and strengthens team spirit.
Ben’s story reminds us of the importance of inclusive workplaces, supportive environments, and the power of meaningful work in helping all individuals reach their potential.
Supported Transitional Employment Programming (STEP): STEP gives adults with disabilities and other barriers the opportunity to work with a Goodwill Career Coach to develop job skills, pursue employment that matches abilities, and work in competitive and integrated work environment in the community.
